I came across this strange little book a few weeks ago now, and was inspired by the many photos and other blog posts from hundreds of girls creating beautiful messes in "Wreck this Journal", by Keri Smith. If you're reading this wondering what the hell I'm going on about, Wreck this Journal is a book consisting of pages which are, for the most part, blank. Some pages have instructions on them which you are supposed to follow, in order to destroy your book in a creative and unique way. I've never been very arty, or very good at it, but this idea really sparked my interest and after only a few days of obsessively scouring the internet for photos of various completed pages from the book, I popped in to Urban Outfitters and bought one for myself on the 30th November. Around a week later, here I am to show you the pages I've started to work on in the book so far, and I can tell you that I'm absolutely loving it.
So here's my brand new journal. I actually spent time sifting through the copies they had in the store to find the one in the best condition. I knew it was a waste of time even whilst I was doing it, but I just couldn't help myself! Maybe destroying my brand new book will be more of a challenge than I thought!
Before I started wrecking, I thought it would be a good idea to have a look round my house and gather some supplies, as well as pick up a few things from the shops. I managed to find colouring pencils, pens, glue, scissors, felt tips, paints, brushes, string, and a few other things I thought might come in handy.
The first page I tackled was the blank one opposite where you fill in your name. I had no idea what to do for my first page, and I searched on the internet for hours to give me ideas, before deciding that I wanted to do something that meant something to me. In the end I went for an "Alice in Wonderland" theme. In a way this book is going to be my own little rabbit whole, and so I thought it was appropriate. I used water colour paints, an am happy with how it turned out, since I'm definitely no artist.
I definitely had fun experimenting with my water colour paints on this page. I'd never used them before this book and I think they'll take a bit of getting used to, but they're very fun. I'm not too sure what I'm going to do on the opposite page at the moment, possibly just more blended blues and purples.
The next double page didn't take much time to complete, although I might add more to it later.
The last page I had a go at this week was the materials page. I did this one during a free period at school and just just used pencil for it, which I think makes a nice change to the paint. I just drew on some of the supplies it suggests you may need and coloured them in.
So that's everything I did this week in my "Wreck this Journal". It was definitely worth the £8.99 I spent on it, and so far couldn't recommend it highly enough if you want to do something a little creative. I know what my sister's getting for Christmas! Look out for another blog post next week for an update on the state of my "Wreck this Journal".
